Getting the basics like naval transport capacity, imperialist, air transport capacity can go before that and are probably wise to get fast, but ultimately those 2 are what matters most to your gameplay

Lift the fog, affordable support, all the ground special defense upgrades (except unlocking it, at like r7-8), and the faster and cheaper upgrades are more important than lucky upgrades so lucky can come later, but you still need to get them quick. Don't buy the marine upgrades (except unlocking subs and marines) unless you're playing a fixed stealth style. Also buy ground secondary defense asap. Militia are the most efficient unit in the game.

Well everything that was said here only applies if he is looking for play infantry-related strategies as low rank... I would personally get all marines upgrades and go MoS. It is way funnier and helps you to rank-up faster (means more SP to buy the other upgrades).

To play mos you still need to defend with infantry, and having faster and cheaper infantry is crucial. You also need infantry upgrades to play imp, nc, blitz, and sm (for non prem). Even though I love playing with marines, infantry upgrades are more important.

Having them is a good addition and probably #2 priority for a MoS player, however I disagree with them being more important than Marines upgrades for a MoS / GW (and maybe even HW) player.

but if he were to go for marines right now, the only strat he could really play would be GW, with a semi working MoS... general gameplay by getting infantry upgrades opens up a lot more

I was rank 6 with all marines upgrades, and I quickly made up my way to a bit before rank 8 (then the merge happened and I changed my style) . Playing with stealth units is fun and you can get a lot more SP than by playing with infantries. I've even made an alt account and reached rank 4 in few games because beating opponents becomes a lot easier with stealth marines than with infantries, even when you don't have neither of the upgrades. Just my opinion...

Clovis as a gw player I know what you're getting at, but to optimize your own gameplay these are the upgrades essential for that... if you play for fun this question should've maybe been worded differently, but if so then I completely agree with what you're saying, stealth is fun to play with.

HW is Hybrid Warfare - a very expensive strategy only available for premium players (if you even get premium, don't buy this until is your very last upgrade). So about which upgrade you should get... you probably saw that I disagree with Dbacks about Infantries upgrades being more important than marines upgrades, at least for a player who likes to play with stealth units (MoS, GW, HW). But this all depends on you. If you like to play with marines, submarines and stealth then you should get MoS and the marines capacities. Speaking for experience, it makes it easier for you to earn SP in-games, rank up and buy other upgrades faster. I find it a lot easier to beat someone with Invisible marines than with Infantries. But if you want to play low-cash games with tanks and infantries, or just agree with Dacks then you can opt for the infantries upgrades instead. They allow you to play a variety of strategies such as PD, IMP, etc more efficiently, and also allows you to make use of your starting infantries very well. On a third scenario though, if you like playing high starting cash games such as 25k or 50k, you should get something potent like Blitzkrieg or Sky Menace. The only problem is that you will have to stick to those games for a long time since those strategies aren't very effective at low cash games. So you've got three patch: 1. My Patch: Naval transport capacity, naval stealth (subs), Ground Stealth (marines), Master Of Stealth (strategy), Air Support (sentries), Ground Secondary Defense (militias), Air Transport Capacity I (ATS I), Guerrilla Warfare (strategy), then both faster and expandable marines., [...................] 2. The patch that Dacks and Tact are suggesting you would look like: Naval transport capacity, Imperialist, Ground Secondary Defense (militias), Air Transport Capacity I (ATS I), Faster Infantries, ATS capacity II, Expandable infantries, [...................] 3. If you're interested in high starting cash games: Naval Transport Capacity, Naval Stealth, Ground Stealth, Master Of Stealth, ATS capacity I, Sky Menace or Blitzkrieg, ATS capacity II, [...................]

Isn't general defense, faster general etc for prems? I mean It doesn't show up on my upgrades list. Thanks Tactician: I'll stay away from those Thanks Clovis, I'll think about which strategy to use. and thanks you for categorizing the different suggestions. I know this isn't about up grades, but does anyone know where I can find a good tutorial about how to transport long distances?

Yes it is, hence why he said "ignore general ones". About the transport thing, you can't make them have more range but you can use shortcuts and mix several transport in a efficient way to get further.
