Ever Since taking office, President Duarte of the Philippines has launched a massive "surge" to deal with the drug epidemic in the Philippines. He has promised to end this problem within his first six months. Over 2,000 drug traffickers and users have been killed by police raising human rights questions relating to the immense leeway law enforcement has been given. Hundreds of thousands of drug addicts have turned themselves into authorities (over half a million) overwhelming the prisons.
Is this a necessary evil? Or should there be more time given for prosecution than simple execution on the streets? Given that drug addiction is classified as a mental illness, would this program be better if drug dealers were targeted while the addicts were treated?
